What Is Venturing?

Venturing is a youth development program of the Boy Scouts of America for young men and women who are 13 and have completed the eighth grade, or age 14 through 20 years of age. Venturing’s purpose is to provide positive experiences to help young people mature and to prepare them to become responsible and caring adults.

Venturing shares the same aims as “regular” Boy Scouts: character development, citizenship training, and physical and mental fitness.  The methods of Venturing are similar, but have been designed to address the needs and composition of this older, co-ed branch of Scouting.

The program was revised in 2014, based on substantial input from past and present Venturers, to organize activities and advancement within 4 broad program areas:

A

Adventure

Through Tier 1 (single day), Tier II (weekend), and Tier III (4 days or more) activities, Crew activities help provide team-building opportunities, new meaningful experiences, practical leadership application, and lifelong memories to young adults.

L

Leadership

Members can expect to develop broad interpersonal leadership skills, applicable to life situations during their Crew membership and beyond.

Crew officers are elected by their peers, and, even more than in a Troop, the Crew is youth-lead and run.

P

Personal Growth

Program activities in this area, many of which are individual, seek to foster growth in the skills and ethical/moral foundations which support economic independence, life-long learning, and timeless values.

S

Service

Multiple service projects help develop behavior leading to ongoing sense of responsibility

Venturing includes 4 levels of advancement, with increasing responsibility and complexity required within each of the ALPS program areas as Venturers work through the following ranks:

Venturing  =>  Discovery =>  Pathfinder =>  Summit

Crew 140 runs activities throughout the year that address adventure, leadership, and service, and maintains a closed Facebook group as its primary communication method.  For questions or to register, please contact CrewAdvisor140@gmail.com
